I Pledge Allegiance

I've told you before that we are very active at our Southern Baptist church and Jackson now attends a Southern Baptist church daycare. Every Thursday morning all the kids are taken into the sanctuary of the church and the pastor comes and does a chapel service with the kids. I know Jackson has learned a lot from attending this school, but only last night did he share something new with us.

I was reading some Bible stories to Jackson in bed when I decided to leave the lamp on for him and let him continue "reading" his Bible until he fell asleep. Jeremy and I went into the living room, put the closed captioning on "House" and muted the television. We were listening to Jackson "read" to himself when he said something we had never heard before:

"I pwedge allegiance to the Bible (loooonnnnnggg pause) God's Holy Word. (another long pause) Make it a lamp for my feet. And a light for my path."

You may (or may not) recognize that as part of the Pledge to the Bible: I pledge allegiance to the Bible, God's Holy Word, I will make it a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path and will hide its words in my heart that I might not sin against God.

It is something that our church normally only does during Vacation Bible School, but I'm guessing the Brother Mike has the kids saying it during their chapel service on Thursday's. Both Jeremy and I were very surprised, and proud, to hear him saying it to himself during his Bible "reading." We didn't even know that he knew it!

Of course when we realized what he was saying we had to go back into his room and tell him how proud we were of him. We then got him to "teach" me the pledge. It just warmed my heart listening to my precious little boy. I'm so glad to know that we are raising him in a Christian home, and that he knows about God's love for him, from his entire family, to his church, and from his school. We are so blessed!

Proverbs 22:6 (The Message): Point your kids in the right direction - when they're old they won't be lost.

Oh that brings tears to my eyes.

That brings back memories of VBS when I was growing up. We always said that and the pledge to the Christian flag.

I'm glad you posted this.

It is absolutely awesome the things he will learn at that school and at home, and even at our church. I amazed at how much Gracie has learned in the last two years...she can quote Bible verses better than I can!

Nana is just beaming. We are so proud of him. This just puts icing on the cake (for moving Jackson from his other day care to this Southern Baptist day care). If all goes okay, you will be proud of the picture of Jackson that I am entering in the Autauga County Fair. It may not win a ribbon, but it is priceless.

I remember saying that pledge at the Christian school I went to as a kid.

It's always so great to hear your kids repeat things they've learned at church. I always think, "Oh, wow! He's really getting it."

Wow! It's all I can do to remember it from one year to the next at VBS. Go Jackson!
