Dragon Boat Day!

On Saturday I raced in my first Dragon Boat challenge with the team from my office. Our team name was Counting Crue, the Motley Crue version of accountants, complete with tattoos and skull caps. Each team consists of a drummer that keeps the team stroke cadence and 20 rowers. We raced 3 races over the day, and we finished up in 19th out of 67 teams. We won our first heat, came in 4th out of 6 teams for our second heat, and won our last heat. Not too shabby! It was so hot outside. We hit 100 degrees, and the heat index was pushing 110, but our tent crew did a great job of keeping us cool and hydrated throughout the day, and we had tons to eat and drink. I am sore beyond belief, but I had an absolute blast and can't wait to do it again next year. Until then, paddles up! Enjoy the pics and videos!

Kids Have Eaten My Brain Cells

In the past few days I have:

  • Driven 5 miles with my windshield wipers on.  It wasn't raining.

  • Stood in the elevator for over a minute wondering when I was going to get to my floor. Did you know it helps if you push the button for which floor you want.

  • Sat at my desk for 20 minutes with headphones in. With no music playing.

  • Driven for 10 minutes down the interstate with my blinker on. Yup...I was "that" person.

I'm either majorly distracted, exhausted or my kids have eaten my brain cells. I vote for the latter.

Dear Jackson....

Dear Jackson,

Happy 8th Birthday to you! It doesn't even remotely seem possible that you are already 8 years old. I don't feel 8 years older, but here you are, all tall, lanky and skinny celebrating yet another birthday!

At 8 years old, you are kind, compassionate and so funny! You have an imagination as big as the earth, and you love your family and Jesus even more than that. You are such a good brother to Anderson, even when he is annoying you, and every so often I catch these moments of pure sweetness between the two of you that take my breath away. It's usually in the quiet times when I catch you doing something simple like teaching him how to build Lego buildings and I can see just how much you adore each other.

You have just started 3rd grade, are in the gifted program, and today is the first time you have ever celebrated your birthday during the school year. You are getting to take cupcakes to school to celebrate with your class, and you are so excited!

One day you are going to be able to look at all these birthday letters I've written you over the years, and here is what I want you to know from this years letter: you are an amazing child, a wonderful son, and I am so very proud to be your Mama. You make my heart infinitely happy in ways I didn't know I was possible before you were born. I knew I would love being a mom, but you have exceeded my wildest dreams of what a mother/son relationship could be like. You, Jackson, are a super kid, and I love you to the moon and back a million times over. Happy Birthday, Jackson!

Fishing Rodeo Birthday

We had Jackson's 8th birthday party this past weekend at the Fishing Rodeo at Lanark in Millbrook. It was probably the most unorthodox birthday party I've ever hosted, but I think it turned out okay. And the kids got free Fishing Rodeo tee shirts, so that was their "party favor." Mostly just because I forgot to do party favors, but it worked. It was way more crowded than I thought it would be, but it was fun. And I didn't get a single family picture of the birthday boy with our family and the grands, which kills me, but I don't guess I can do anything about it now, huh? We had the party from 8-10, because ya know, we were fishing, and it was H-O-T outside. After the kids got done fishing we went back to our house for cake and ice cream. Nothing fancy in the slightest, but I think it was a success. Jackson got to have a good time with his family and friends, and he even caught a catfish! Jackson loved the presents he got, and for 8 years old, he racked up. He got a camelbak from his Papa and Gigi (which he had wanted all summer long!) and a real bow and arrow set from Nana and Tata. He was so excited about both, and has even been practicing in the back yard (with the camelback on). He is one happy kiddo. His present from us will arrive today (a bird cage), and even though we might be crazy, we are about to add a few more members to our family in the shape of 2 parakeets. That's what he asked for, and since my parents were crazy enough to let me have random animals like birds, rabbits and fish as a kid, I don't feel like I should deny him the pleasure. So our family will be growing a little this week. Wish us luck, and enjoy the pictures!
