Anderson's Birth Story

*I wanted to go ahead and write this before most of the details get fuzzy with time. I know some of the details were shared on facebook and on the blog, but this is the whole story. Feel free to pass if this isn't your thing!

Monday, June 6th I had my last regularly scheduled OB appointment. Everything felt fine so I was super surprised when my blood pressure was elevated again. After Dr. Lawhon saw my numbers (140/90ish), he asked me how I felt about being induced a day early. Honestly, I wasn't thrilled by this. There was still lots to do around the house with last minute stuff, and I was really looking forward to our last family of three outing to the Montgomery Biscuits game scheduled for that night. We had been given tickets to one of the suites at the stadium, so I knew that we would be able to enjoy the game in the comfort of air conditioning, and I also was really looking forward to spending some more time with Jackson. The new plan was for me to check into the hospital around 9 or 10 that night, start the pitocin at 2:00 in the morning and to have Dr. Lawhon break my water at 5:00 in the morning.

After we left the appt we started making phone calls to let our families know the change of plans. It was then that I decided to go ahead and plan on going to the baseball game since we would already be that much closer to the hospital from the stadium. We rushed home, finished packing, Jeremy did some yard work, got cleaned up and we headed to the game. We had such a good time at the game, and it was so nice getting to spend time with Jackson before everything changed. We met so many people at the game that were amazed that we were leaving the game to go to the hospital.

We ended up leaving the game around 8:30 that night and headed to the hospital. One of Jeremy's coworkers has a wife that is a nurse at the hospital and she reserved the biggest birthing suite for us. We got right into our room and made ourselves comfortable. The room was huge! Because things weren't going to be started until after midnight I had a few hours to kill. Jackson loved checking the room out, and around 9:00 my parents came up to the hospital to pick Jackson up. It was at that point that Jackson lost it. He started crying and that got me all choked up. It was so hard saying goodbye to him because he was so upset. Of course by the time they got to the car he was fine.

After they left I played on the computer for awhile and read a magazine until 11:00 when I got up to go take a shower and fix my hair. I was settled back into the bed at midnight and was given a dose of a mild sedative to help me rest. At 2:00 on the dot the nurse hooked the pitocin up and checked me. I was still 4 cm. I fell back asleep and woke up at 3:30 in the morning to go potty. It was at that time that I learned from Jeremy that my pitocin had been cranked up twice while I was sleeping. The nurse told Jeremy that I would know when it was time to get my epidural. Well, by the time that I got back to the bed after pottying I was feeling some pretty strong contractions. I guess me moving around had gotten the medicine moving, and I went from feeling nothing to being in a great deal of pain. About 15 minutes after my potty break I told Jeremy that it was time to let the nurse know that I was ready for an epidural. By the time Jeremy made it from my hospital bed to the door I felt my water breaking. I said to Jeremy, "My water just broke!" He said, "Are you sure?" I laughed and said, "Yeah, I'm pretty sure!" I had 5 strong gushes of water and the nurse confirmed that my water had broken. She checked me again around 4:00 and I was at 5 cm, and she told me that I had sprung a leak, but that my water hadn't broken completely.

We started making phone calls to our families to let them know that things were moving pretty quickly. The nurse wasn't sure if I would make it to 5:00 for the doctor to finish breaking my water. The anesthesiologist arrived and got my epidural started. It wasn't fun having it put in because I was having some pretty strong contractions by that time. The epidural was amazing! Dr. Lawhon described it as, "the perfect epidural" because I had complete control of my legs, without feeling any pain. I was able to push up and move around the entire time, which was really nice. After I got the epidural I was able to relax without feeling any pain, and everything stayed pretty calm for awhile. Our families got to the hospital around 5:00, and at 5:30 Dr. Lawhon arrived and checked me. I was at 9 cm. He broke my water and decided to hang out since it wouldn't be long. He stayed in the room chatting with our families which we thought was really cool. He's an amazing guy, and it was such a normal thing to have him chatting with us while we waited. The plan was for our families to stay in the room with us as we delivered, but behind the curtain, away from the action.

A few minutes before 6:00 Dr. Lawhon cleared the room out to check me again. I was 10 cm and ready to go. My sister Kellyn was standing outside the door and she heard Dr. Lawhon saying, "Push!" They all snuck back into the room behind the curtain and waited for Anderson to make his appearance. At 6:01 am on June 7, 2011, after only 4 hours and 5 easy pushes, Anderson Moore Wade was born sunny side up and screaming loudly! He weighed 8lbs 2oz, and was 20 inches long, coming in just shy of Jackson's birth measurements of 8lbs 4 oz and 20 1/2 inches long. They placed him on my chest and I got to meet my new little boy. It was such an amazing moment, and from the moment I laid eyes on him it was love at first sight. He is the spitting image of Jackson, and he has been such an easy going and laid back baby. Jeremy and I have been truly blessed with two amazing little boys, and I can't wait to see how God is going to use them!

He's Pretty Amazing!

We've been settling into our new "normal" around here, and for the most part it's going okay. I firmly believe that its much easier to bring baby number two home becasue at least this time around we knew what to expect. Anderson has been doing great, and he continues to be a very laid back and easy baby. We're nursing around 10-11 at night, again around 2-3, and then maybe 6-7 in the morning so it hasn't been too hard so far. Anderson loves to be swaddled and he will stay in froggy mode for as long as you will cuddle him, which of course I don't mind at all!

Jackson is doing great. He loves Anderson so much, and is always wanting to give him hugs and kisses. The only problems we've had is when both boys want/need something at the same time and neither of them is willing to be patient for even a second. We did send Jackson back to school today just so he can get back to a normal routine. We have Vacation Bible School tonight and I'm hoping to venture out to see the opening ceremony part if I'm feeling up to it.

Recovery wise I'm doing okay. I've had a killer headache for 3 days now which hasn't been fun. I have another call into the doctor to see what they recommend I do. Most of the milk cow issues I was dealing with on Friday have eased up greatly which was a huge relief. So far nursing has been going great, and I'm super pleased with how well we are doing. I'm not going to stress myself out about it this time, but we'll just take things a day at a time.

I’d Like To Formally Introduce You To Anderson!

A Little Update On Our New Little Man

So Anderson is now a day old and he is doing amazing! Other than him cutting lose when he was born, he hasn't cried a single time. I'm super happy about that (obviously), but I'm also kinda afraid he's just saving up for when we go home tomorrow. I guess we'll see. Anderson has been very relaxed and calm. He's super happy being passed around, and I think he'll definitely be a laid back baby. We are nursing and that's going okay. I'm going to have the lactation nurse come back in today to work with me on latching, but so far it's been going pretty well. Anderson got circumcised a little while ago, and they will bring him back to us around 9 this morning.

Jackson is doing good. He's interested in looking at his new brother, but still hasn't wanted to hold Anderson, so for now we aren't pushing the issue. He'll come around on his own time. During the delivery Jeremy's family and my family were in the delivery room, but on the other side of the curtain (away from the action). My Mom told me that once Anderson was born and they heard him crying Jackson got the biggest smile on his face. It wasn't 10 seconds after Anderson was born that I heard Jackson pipe up and say, "Can I open my big brother presents now?" LOL! So to answer the question about the baseball bat in the background of the pics, that was one of Jackson's presents from Jeremy and I, not something to use during labor if Jeremy got on my nerves!

I'm doing really good after delivery, I'm just super tired. More tired than I remember being with Jackson. We've had lots of visitors but I'm just reminding myself that people aren't really coming by to see me, but to see the baby. So if I doze off I'm just cutting myself some slack! It's almost time for breakfast and then I'm going to jump in the shower. I'll try to get some more pictures up today so I can show off my new little guy some more! Y'all take care!

The Girl Who Cried, "It's Time!"

Wednesday at work I was having some pretty bad back pain and spent most of the day sitting at my desk with a blanket rolled up behind my back trying to provide some support. I've heard about back labor, but I wasn't sure what level of back pain would actually constitute back labor. So I popped some Tylenol and tried to tough it out. Then my stomach started hurting down really low. Not contractions hurting, just general heaviness and pressure. The Tylenol didn't help, so after a few hours I took some more which also didn't help.

And here is where I'm about to make a confession to y'all: I don't really know what the beginning of labor feels like. Yes, I've had a baby before, but I was induced with Jackson so I never had to do the contractions waiting game. From my experience Wednesday, it's painfully obvious that I'm not good at this whole labor thing.

After I had been hurting pretty much the entire day at work a coworker who has had 2 kids herself, (Hi Susan E.!) convinced me that I at least needed to call the doctor. I told the nurse about my back pain and pressure and the fact that I was dilated 4 cm on Tuesday and after she spoke to my doctor I was told to head on into the hospital to get checked out.

Y'all, I really thought that this was it. I made my phone calls to let everyone know where I was going and I headed over to the hospital. I got there and met Jeremy and was hooked up to the monitors and was examined again. They asked if I was having contractions and I felt like an idiot to say that I'm just not sure. I feel lots of very sharp "twitches" but I'm not sure if they are contractions, or just my hyperactive baby. After being on the monitors for awhile it was painfully obvious, even to me, that my baby is the source of the sharp "twitches" I've been feeling. I am having contractions, just nothing intense yet. I'm also sad to report that there has been no change in the dilation amount, despite the pressure I've been feeling.

So there it is; after 38 weeks of dealing with my second pregnancy, I've become "that" woman that cried wolf about going into labor. I just knew that I was going to have Anderson today, but it seems that he's already more stubborn than his big brother!

38 Weeks!! 1 Week To Go!

How Far Along: 38 weeks. My induction date has been scheduled for June 8th, 1 week from today!

Size of baby: 19 1/2 inches, about the size of leeks and weighing in at 6.8 pounds.

Total Weight Gain/Loss: 11 lbs. I gained 1 lb. this week.

Maternity Clothes: Maternity all the time.

Gender: We're having another little boy, Anderson Moore Wade.

Movement: Less movement during the day, although he's still pretty active at night.

Sleep: Not sleeping good at all right now. I have a serious case of allergies, and at times I feel like I'm going to die from not being able to breathe.

Symptoms: Not as many contractions, but I do have some back pain and pressure.

Cravings: Nothing much. There's no room for food anymore!

What I Miss: Breathing normally, not waddling, aand not being a hormonal mess.

Best Moment this week: Pretty normal week.

What I am looking forward to: 1 week from now we get to meet our little man and I can't wait!

Is your nursery done? It's done! I was super happy with the results, and I'm just so relieved that the room is done.

Are you getting nervous? Not really. I'm definitely more relaxed about delivering this time around now that I know what to expect. However, I do not want the whole "water breaking outside of the labor room" experience so I am nervous about that.

Have you dropped yet? Not that I can tell, but the doctor said he is definitely where he is supposed to be. I'm dilated 4 cm which is a big change from a week ago when I was only dilated 1 1/2 cm.

How do you feel in general? Pretty uncomfortable. It's going to be a long two weeks!

What are you getting the most excited about? Meeting Anderson and watching Jackson's reaction to meeting his baby brother.

Any big fears or concerns? I don't want to be "that" person that didn't know they were in labor. Now that I'm dilated to 4, I'm really scared that I won't know that it's time to go, and by the time I get there that I will be too far gone for an epidural. I am not at all interested in natural childbirth!

What is in your hospital bag? Clothes, makeup/hair, a book, movies for Jackson, and lots more stuff. I'm ready to go!

How many more days until D-Day? 7 days!

37 Weeks!! Only 2 Weeks To Go!

How Far Along: 37 weeks. My induction date has been scheduled for June 8th, 2 weeks from today!

Size of baby: 19 inches, about the size of Swiss Chard (although I don't know what that is) and weighing in at 6 1/3 pounds.

Total Weight Gain/Loss: 10 lbs. I gained 2 lbs. this week.

Maternity Clothes: Maternity all the time.

Gender: We're having another little boy, Anderson Moore Wade.

Movement: Lots of movement still. He's an active little boy!

Sleep: I have been super uncomfortable at night. I definitely am at the beached whale phase of pregnancy.

Symptoms: Contractions are coming pretty frequently now, and some of them are pretty dang bad. And I shared with you about my blood pressure scare from Monday. That wasn't fun, but so far I'm not swelling which I am very grateful for.

Cravings: Popsicles.

What I Miss: Breathing normally, not waddling, aand not being a hormonal mess.

Best Moment this week: Pretty normal week.

What I am looking forward to: 2 weeks from now we get to meet our little man and I can't wait!

Any big fears or concerns? My blood pressure scared me this week, especially because I was feeling fine. I hope it stays down, and that I don't end up having any trouble.

What is in your hospital bag? I have my makeup/toiletries bag packed, and Anderson's bag packed, and a few things put aside for my bag. As long as I have my makeup I'll be fine!

How many more days until D-Day? 14 days!

A Little Scare

I had my regulary scheduled OB visit around lunch on Monday. When I got there I got weighed as usual (+2 lbs for a total gain of 10 lbs) and then the nurse checked my blood pressure. It was 142/102 which is way out of normal for me. Usually I'm a perfect 120/80. The nurse asked if I was feeling okay and I commented that I was feeling fine. No headache, swelling, or anything else that would indicate a problem. She casually remarked that Dr. Lawhon would probably want to check me again before I left to see if it had come down.

So then I got taken into a room and wait for "the" check to see if I was dilated. My Dr. came in, and without getting all TMI with y'all, I'm just going to say that the check was extremely painful this time around. I had tears in my eyes by the time he was finished. At least he told me that I was dilated 1 1/2 cm so the pain wasn't for nothing. After my exam he started checking my reflexes which is something he has never done. He commented that because my BP was up, he wanted the nurse to check me out again. So I got dressed and went back down the hall for a recheck. I knew at this point, based on the pain that I had just been in, that my BP wasn't going to be any better, and I was right. I got 3 readings back to back that were 144/107, so off I went ot the OB triage center at the hospital for them to monitor me.

After I had blood drawn I was hooked up on the fetal monitor, BP monitor and contraction monitor for several hours. At first my BP was still high, but it gradually came down to normal for me. I am having contractions, but nothing too severe. I was sent home with no real special instructions, and I will follow up next week with my doctor if nothing changes before then.

So that's where I stand. I promptly came home and started nesting again. I still don't have my hospital bag packed, but Anderson's stuff and my toiletries are ready to go. I'm not about to chance going into labor without my makeup bag being ready!

35 Weeks!!

How Far Along: 35 weeks. Officially less than 5 weeks to go, but I'm pretty sure that I have about 4 weeks left.

Size of baby: over 18 inches, and weighing in at 5 1/4 pounds, about the weight of a honeydew.

Total Weight Gain/Loss: As of last week I had gained 13 pounds total, but I'm probably up a few more since then.

Maternity Clothes: Maternity all the time.

Gender: We're having another little boy, Anderson Moore Wade.

Movement: Lots of strong movements still, but mostly just kicking. He doesn't have enough room to flip around anymore! As I'm typing this he is putting on quite a show!

Sleep: It's loads of fun right now! Between constant potty trips, restless legs and the inability to breathe, I'm just loving this stage of pregnancy!

Symptoms: Lots of Braxton Hicks contractions, some of which are very strong and painful.

Cravings: Sweet foods, but I'm resisting the urge!

What I Miss: Being comfortable.

Best Moment this week: It's been a pretty normal week so far.

What I am looking forward to: I have a baby shower this weekend at my church and I'm really excited about that, not to mention going back to the doctor on Monday for another check up.

Is your nursery done? No, but it's getting closer!

Are you getting nervous? Yes, but not about labor. I'm just nervous about getting things ready for him!

Have you dropped yet? I think so. I'm definitely feeling a lot of pressure!

How do you feel in general? Very pregnant.

What are you getting the most excited about? To see Jackson's reaction to meeting his baby brother.

Any big fears or concerns? Actually getting the nursery done on time.

What is in your hospital bag? Nothing yet. I better get to working on that!

How many more days until D-Day? Less than 35 days!

34 Weeks!!!

How Far Along: 34 weeks. Less than 6 weeks to go, but according to my doctor's visit on Monday, I will probably have Anderson in my arms in 5 weeks, give or take a couple days.

Size of baby: 18 inches, and weighing in at 4 3/4 pounds, about the weight of a canteloupe.

Total Weight Gain/Loss: Oops I did it again; at this EXACT time when I was pregnant with Jackson I gained 6 pounds in 2 weeks. I was bound and determined not to let that happen again, but I failed. I gained exactly 6 pounds over the last two weeks, which puts my total weight gain up to 13 pounds. As much as I know that I'm supposed to gain weight, it doesn't make it any easier.

Maternity Clothes: Maternity all the time.

Gender: We're having another little boy, Anderson Moore Wade.

Movement: His movements are slowing down some, but still very strong. I don't think he has as much room now, but he still makes his presense known!

Sleep: Oh sweet mercy, the restless legs are back with a vengeance, and I'm up constantly to go to the bathroom. The worst part of that is that after I've been still for awhile it's like my whole body gets stiff and I can hardly move. I'm moaning and groaning like an old lady!

Symptoms: Lots of pressure. His head is sitting directly on the left side of my pelvis, and the pressure never lets up. I'm also having some pretty strong Braxton Hicks.

Cravings: Strawberries and watermelon, although based on the scales this week you would never be able to tell.

What I Miss: Being comfortable.

Best Moment this week: Our last trip before Anderson makes his appearance. We had a great time at the beach with my family, and I'll post pictures very soon.

What I am looking forward to: My last two week visit is in a couple weeks, and then I switch to weekly visits. Dr. Lawhon will start checking me next time (which I'm not looking forward to), but I am dying to know if I'm dilating already. I was 3 centimeters dilated with Jackson for a month, so we'll find out soon enough if the same is true for Anderson!

33 Weeks!!!

How Far Along: 33 weeks. Less than 7 weeks to go!

Size of baby: 17 inches, and weighing in at 4 pounds, about the weight of a pineapple.

Total Weight Gain/Loss: 7 pounds per the doctor. I go back on Monday for my next visit, and I'm expecting to have gained about 3 more pounds.

Maternity Clothes: Maternity all the time.

Gender: We're having another little boy, Anderson Moore Wade.

Movement: The little guy has been all over the place this week, and he's put on quite the show a few times. I love every second of it.

Sleep: I'm back to having a rough time sleeping. Between intense heartburn, restless legs, and having to go to the bathroom all the time, I'm not getting much rest. I've also entered the beached whale phase of pregnancy, and it's almost impossible to get myself out of bed without some help. It's rather embarrassing!

Symptoms: Still having some pretty intense Braxton Hicks contractions with a good bit of pressure.

Cravings: Strawberries.

What I Miss: Being comfortable.

Best Moment this week: Seeing Anderson moving all over the place. I just love it!

What I am looking forward to: Going to the beach this weekend for our last family vacation before Anderson makes his appearance!

32 Weeks!!!

How Far Along: 32 weeks. Less than 8 weeks to go! It's completely flying by!

Size of baby: 16.7 inches, and weighing in at 3.7 pounds.

Total Weight Gain/Loss: 7 pounds. I had a doctor's appointment on Monday and I am almost dead even with my weight gain with Jackson at the same point in pregnancy. When I was this far along with Jackson I had gained 6 pounds. The doctor did warn me that this was the point that I started really gaining weight with Jackson, so I'm going to be pretty careful for the next few weeks.

Maternity Clothes: Maternity all the time with the exception of a few t-shirts.

Gender: We're having another little boy, Anderson Moore Wade.

Movement: He's still head down and kicking me all the time in my rib cage. It takes my breath away at times he's kicking so hard. He's really active when I'm trying to go to sleep.

Sleep: It's been good this week. I haven't had the restless legs, and I'm getting some good rest for a change.

Symptoms: I'm having some pretty intense Braxton Hicks contractions, and just a general sense of heaviness in my stomach. I think he may be dropping some because at times it feels like he is about to fall out!

Cravings: Strawberries.

What I Miss: Absolutely nothing this week.

Best Moment this week: Another great doctor's visit. My blood pressure is perfect, Anderson is measuring just right, and I'm doing good on my weight. I have nothing to complain about.

What I am looking forward to: Meeting Anderson in person in less than 8 weeks!

31 Weeks!!

How Far Along: 31 weeks. Less than 9 weeks to go! I can't believe that I'm already into single digits!

Size of baby: 16 inches, and weighing in at 3.3 pounds, as much as 4 naval oranges.

Total Weight Gain/Loss: 6 pounds and holding. I go back to the doctor on Monday so I'll get an update then. I think I've done pretty good this week as far as weight goes.

Maternity Clothes: Maternity, all the time with the exception of a few t-shirts.

Gender: We're having another little boy, Anderson Moore Wade.

Movement: He's head down and kicking me all the time. I've felt hiccups a few times which are funny to watch.

Sleep: It's been fair this week. Just fair.

Symptoms: Heartburn and some serious round ligament pain. My tummy is starting to feel really heavy, and at time it feels like he's about to fall out!

Cravings: Strawberries and watermelon.

What I Miss: Nothing much this week. It's been pretty quiet this week.

Best Moment this week: It's been a pretty normal week with nothing much to report.

What I am looking forward to: Meeting Anderson in person in less than 9 weeks!

30 Weeks!!

How Far Along: 30 weeks. Less than 10 weeks to go!

Size of baby: 15.7 inches, and weighing 3 pounds, about the size of a large cabbage.

Total Weight Gain/Loss: 6 pounds and holding.

Maternity Clothes: Maternity, all the time with the exception of a few t-shirts.

Gender: We're having another little boy, Anderson Moore Wade.

Movement: Per the doctor on Monday, Anderson is head down which completely explains the kicking in my rib cage right now.

Sleep: It's been better this week, with the exception of heartburn that is waking me up. I usually just roll over and ask Jeremy to get some milk for me. He's so good to me!

Symptoms: Just heartburn.

Cravings: Cookie cake. I decided Saturday night around 8:00 that I just had to have some cookie cake. Sadly I had neither a cookie cake or the ingredients (or inclination) to make one. Well, Jeremy surprised me Sunday after he got home from work with a delicious cookie cake. Like I said, he's so good to me! What I Miss: Nothing much this week. It's been pretty quiet this week.

Best Moment this week: Finding out that I've only gained 6 pounds!

What I am looking forward to: Meeting Anderson in person in less than 10 weeks!

28 Weeks!!!

How Far Along: 28 weeks

Size of baby: 14.8 inches, and weighing 2.2 pounds, about the size of a large eggplant.

Total Weight Gain/Loss: I saw the doctor on Monday and I've gained 6 pounds total, which the doctor said was excellent.

Maternity Clothes: Maternity.

Gender: We're having another little boy, Anderson Moore Wade.

Movement: All the time, some of which have taken my breath away they are so hard.

Sleep: Oh mercy the charlie horses and restless legs are killing me right now.

Symptoms: Just heartburn this week.

Cravings: I think yogurt is just about it for this week.

What I Miss: Not having to potty every time I stand up. I don't think this is going to change anytime soon.

Best Moment this week: Seeing Anderson at the 4D ultrasound was amazing. It shocked me at how much he looked like Jackson, and I know I'm biased, but I'm pretty certain that I'm going to have two of the cutest boys ever!

What I am looking forward to: Meeting Anderson in person in less than 12 weeks!

Meet Our New Little Man!

We had our 4D ultrasound with Anderson on Monday, and we couldn’t be more excited. It turns out that Anderson is the spitting image of his big brother! The only difference was that Anderson was MUCH more cooperative at getting some good shots than Jackson ever was! We took Jackson with us, and he was just so excited to see his brother. One time when he was talking Anderson turned his face directly towards Jackson like he was listening to him. It was pretty neat to see that. We were able to confirm once again that Anderson is, in fact, a little boy, and we know that he has hair and we were even able to see his eyelashes. He has 10 fingers and 10 toes, and he’s even already mastering the fine art of monkey toeing! During our ultrasound we got a smile and a wave (which was awesome), but the absolute best part was getting a glimpse of our precious son and knowing that he is growing just perfectly!

And remember how I told you that he looked like the spitting image of his big brother? Anderson is on the left and Jackson is on the right. They have the same nose, lips and chin, and both even love to keep one hand up by their face!

We have truly been blessed by God, and we can’t wait to meet our new little guy this summer!
